What college courses will help with my shyness?
I'm a very shy 20 year-old going to a community college. Before I declare what I'm going to be majoring in I want to improve my communication skills. What courses would help me? Also, describe what the classes consist of. How would these classes help me?

Speech. You write about a topic, then read it in front of the class. Basic communication.
Drama. You read what someone else wrote in front of a lot of people. More communication.

I have one better and it's free Join a Toastmaster group http://www.toastmasters.org/
You will be encouraged and nurtured by the group and it will help you learn to not only speak publicly but love to speak publicly.
If you cannot find a toastmasters group then find an Improv social group or an improv group like http://www.awkwardsilencecomedy.com/ at your university. Especially if they don't expect performance improv classes can really help a persons shyness. You can often find improv workshops locally at your college through the theater program or at an arts center.
If you can't get into an improv troupe or workshop then theater is the next place I'd go. Acting 101 or basic acting is a great place to start and is usually a highly suggested class for business majors looking to help their communication. You might even try a couple of levels of acting classes to really work your voice. If you can find a theater voice class theya lso work with making your voice sound better.
I would go to a radio and television course. Both have stints that require you to do on camera/mic work and can really help burst the shy bubble.
Also you might try a creative writing course, especially a higher level course. Many of these courses require you to read your work for the class, and generally they are all very supportive of your work. As you read to the class you begin to build a rapport and also develop your communication skills. These classes also require a lot of discussions that encourage you to find your voice and speak. In terms of confidence boosts I highly recommend writing courses.
Lastly you can try just regular speech courses, they're not as effective but some people get some benefits out of them, they are usually found in communications department or English.

Take a public speaking course. Over time you will have to speak in front of your class. This is a scary thing to most people. Most people who take this class feel the same as you entering, and leave feeling much more confident and less shy. Good luck:}
