how often does a printer need to be used?
I have an Inkjet printer that is rarely used. It also rarely works when I need it due to ink issues. My guess is the ink dries out or gets clogged due to lack of use as a new cartridge fixes all issues (when I have one available).
I have been considering printing a test page once or twice a week - will this do the trick?
If I buy a laser printer and leave it dormant for weeks on end will I have the same type of issue? I rarely print, but when I need a few pages not having to run to Staples / Kinko's to either buy cartridges or print there would be nice.

You are correct that if a printer sets for a long time without printer, the ink will dry up. Printing once every couple of weeks may reduce that (in that it might keep the holes the ink comes out of from drying to where they will not work. But it will not do anything to keep the ink inside the cartridges fresher.
Laser jet printer that run on toner do not have the same issue. They have issues with the toner getting wet over in time instead (dew, humidity, etc.) Without knowing the weather where you are, I can not predict how much moisture you would be exposing them to. But generally they do hold up much better than inkjets.
One solution might be to remove the ink cartridges and put them in air tight storage bags when not using them. That can extend the life of the ink cartridge.

Printing a test page once a week will certainly help prolong the life of the cartridges.
Lasers do not suffer from the same problem as they do not use ink, it is a toner cartridge just like a photocopier.
