Shouldn't the working poor be encouraged to vote?

I would like to think so.

This is a country that only gives lip service to the idea that the working poor should have a say in their future. You, and I might like to think so, but all too often we see subtle and not so subtle ways in which there is a push to limit voting to the well off, the elite, and the landowners.

We historically have seen poll taxes, literacy requirements, now the push to voter photo ID.

Supposedly all the people ACORN went out and registered were black and poor, and that, more than anything sealed their fate. That ACORN didn't actually register anyone to vote was ignored in favor of the idea that they fixed, or threw the election.

There are more working poor than any other faction of the electorate, if they ever got together and voted their interests, there would be chaos in the streets. The wealthy like things the way they are, and so any effort to reduce the amount of challenge to their rule is put down via courts or publicity.

I'd like to think we should all vote who are legally able. But I know better.

Oh the working and non working poor are very much able to vote. Here where I live they send buses around to pick up people and take them to the voting percent's.But you never see these buses in the better areas where there are many elderly or people that cant drive anymore live. The buses all stay on streets like MLK and areas such as that.Happens every election.

    I didn't know that they weren't?

Last time I checked, every time I have seen a commercial on television, or heard one on radio that encouraged voting, they did not have caveats in them saying that this message is for everyone BUT the working poor.

You shouldn't have to be encouraged to vote. Voting is a civic duty.

Only if they are going to vote the same as me.

But seriously, yes. Election day should be a federal holiday.

Of course. Republicans are trying to suppress the vote because they know the more people speak up, the more likely the GOP is to lose. If they thought they were in the majority, they'd be encouraging the vote.

No. If you dont pay taxes, work, or have a stake in the community then you shouldnt be encouraged to participate. It could be added that the working poor may have an agenda to support a candidate that will get them the most free money, which is not what the process is about.
