Finding an apartment in Taipei: is it hard for a foreigner?

And what would the price range be for a single room apartment. Are there affordable guest houses as well?

Update:

Also, do you need a guarantor, and give a deposit money like in Japan?

It can be a little difficult to do, if you can't read Chinese. Most often though, you can rely on those who offer their assistance to you, especially if they are local ex-pats that have been through the routine. Taiwanese are NOT known for cheating others in such situtations; most just want a good renter. Bear in mind, YOU are expected to maintain the apartment; i.e., don't call the landlord just because your faucet is dripping.

Prices vary considerably based on location and access to public transportation. Figure NT$6K-12K (US$200-400) per month for a decent apartment, partially furnished, not including utilities fees. You may be asked to pony up first &last months' rent, plus a deposit.
