Can I use a Double 2x10 Header to Enlarge this Window to Patio Door?
I am installing a 6ft wide patio door in place of an existing window. I have uncovered an existing Double 2x10 header with a Double 2x4 top plates on top of this header. Normally, I think this would require a Double 2x12. But, can I use the existing Double top plates with a new Double 2x10 to span the new 6ft wide patio door opening ?

Existing window rough opening is 4 ft wide. The top plates are on top of the existing 2x10s and I do not have enough height to install 2x12's unless I remove the top plates.

With another story on it I would not fudge with 2x10s but you could maybe use a couple 1-3/4" thick LVLs. I would not cut but maybe one of the top plates to get 10-3/4" height.
