Play it this way:
Ocarina of time
Twilight Princess
Skyward Sword
They are/will be amazing games, I think it's worth playing them in order though because the gameplay and graphics have really improved and to some people it may be hard going back to the older games.

I'm going to assume that you have a Wii, and so I recommend Skyward Sword in a heartbeat. It's a prequel to all the Zelda games, which reveals a lot of things for old Zelda fans but is still newbie-friendly.
Zelda games, though having a common timeline, are really quite separate from each other story-wise. It does follow a set of "traditions", such as going into a series of dungeons, saving the eponymous princess Zelda, and solving puzzles with what you may call gadgets, but you can really play any of them without any problems.
I'm recommending Skyward Sword because it is new, it looks nice, and it delivers an amazing motion-control gaming experience. To someone new to the franchise, I recommend Skyward Sword first, then Wind Waker second (which is, funnily enough, set in the distant future of all the Zelda games instead.)
(Some people don't like Wind Waker, but I love it for the unique art direction (which looks strangely gorgeous) and sense of exploration. The only downside of Wind Waker is the emptiness of the ocean, forcing you to idle when you're sailing (and you sail a lot).)
I don't recommend Ocarina of Time etc. just because it's kinda old. It puts off some people. I don't recommend the 2D Zelda games for newbies too, since they're far more difficult to play and are quite alien in game design to most present day's gamers.
edit: And I recommend Twilight Princess third below Skyward Sword just because it is a less interesting Zelda game, in my opinion. It's a really good game, but many would agree that if given the choice, one should choose Skyward Sword.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess graphics are gorgeous. The scenery is amazing. Everything looks beautiful, and the best part is it still feels like a Zelda game. They decided to revert back to the N64 Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask style graphics (but much cleaner, of course) rather than the cell shaded Wind Waker. I like the realistic character design much more for Zelda than the cartoonish one from the other recent games.

Well assuming you have a Wii, Nintendo 64, and GameCube. Lots of people like "Ocarina of Time",
I personally haven't play it yet. However I did like "Wind Waker" and Twilight Princess was a blast.
I think getting "Skyward Sword" would be the best since its the newest. Whichever one you chose you'll have a lot of fun. :)

Get all of them! (:
Or actually I think there is one that you can get that has a couple of them on one or two discs. I would get that. Start off with Ocarina of Time if you can't get that though. The story line will make more sense once you start playing the other games.
