A modem is separate from your computer. The system works like this:

Modem -> Computer OR Modem -> Router -> Computer

Either your modem is hooked directly into your computer or your modem is hooked into a router. Now I'm assuming its the first option because you are talking about buying a router.

All a router requires to work is the power supply (supplied with the router) and an Ethernet cable. The Ethernet cable is hooked from the modem into the router so if your modem is hooked into your computer, you will have to unhook it and plug it into the router.

If you are buying a wireless router make sure to either get another Ethernet cable to go from the wireless router to your computer or buy a USB wireless adapter so your computer can access the wireless router.

Unless of course you are using a 56k dial-up connection in which case the modem is in your computer but that is a little out of my time so I'm not going to be able to help you there.

A WiFi modem is a modem which your computer can hook up with the internet the two by ability of WiFi or by ability of (Ethernet) cable A WiFi router is a router which delivers WiFi connectivity for modems which don't have WiFi. the computer plugs right into a under pressure out modem by using the WiFi router for this to be enabled

Check your IP address on your PC. (ipconfig/all). If it matches your public IP (www.whatismyip.com), then the modem is NOT a router. Most routers give a local LAN IP address of 192.168.x.y
