Female Linguist Air Force, Deployment? Specifics? Basic?
Okay, I'm considering joining the Air Force to become a linguist. I'm just wanting some advice, questions answered, and specific details. I'll begin by giving you some personal details.
I'm 5'9" and weigh 129 lbs. Drs are always saying I'm "too skinny" or "bordeline" for BMI even though I eat well. Is there a minium weight/BMI required?
I took 4 yrs of French elementary-middle school, and 5 yrs of Spanish middle school-high school. I tested out of 3 yrs of college Spanish. My French is pretty rusty, but I'm fairly proficient in all areas of Spanish language. As a child, I spoke Farsi and Chinese as a young child. I don't really remember any of it. (I never used it again after moving out of the majority immigrant neighborhoods.) I love languages and learning about cultures and seem to catch on much more quickly in this department than my peers. My question on this is: Should I choose one of these languages or will the AF choose it for me? If I can choose, which one would deploy me the least? (I have a baby.)
Is age a factor in selection of linguists? I'm 21.
How often are linguists deployed? Can my boyfriend and baby live with me after basic?
If we get married, is it best to do it before or after basic?
What if we both want to join active, him going into fire protection most likely? What will happen to our baby? Do they just send us to basic at different times?
On physical fitness: Grandma, grandpa, & brother are all Marines-good genetics there. Was in Athletics in high school. Just tried doing sit-ups. Easily did 40. Is AF basic really strenuous w/ the recent changes? Just had a classical c-section 3 months ago. Waiting period after c-section? Any special exercise/diet I should do before basic?
Any specific advice on me being a female in the AF?
I know. I asked a BUNCH of questions, but I want to be sure before I even talk to a recruiter. In high school, I talked to a USMC recruiter and told him a little about myself, and he would not leave me alone for a whole year even after I said I had changed my mind.
Thank you! Gracias! Merci!

Evereything jeeper says is correct, except number 4. They are called cryptologic linguists. However, his number 1, is your primary issue at the moment. You cannot join as a single parent. So, unless you give up custody or get married, then its not going to happen.
If you get that solved, as already mentioned, you will have to take the DLAB to gauge your affinity for languages. You did not speak Chinese. You spoke Mandarin or Cantonese. I also highly doubt you could pass the DLPT for any of the languages you mentioned as high school level classes do not begin to approach the level needed to pass this test. You have to be able to read and write those languages as well as speak them....in their different dialects. Spanish used to be one of the biggest groups of wash outs at DLI because people fail to realize that there is so many different forms of Spanish (Spain, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Cuba, etc. all use differing dialect/vocabulary. High school does not cover this usually.

I have this MOS in the Army, and you do not get to choose your language, nor do they usually take into account what you have studied, unless you are really proficient. No, your BF can't live with you, and you also cannot enlist while unmarried with a child; the military considers this to be a single parent, so you will either need to marry him first, or give up custody of your baby. All your physical stuff is fine, don't worry about that. As for deployment, our MOS doesn't typically see a lot of deployment, regardless of language. However, if you are joining the military, you better accept the fact that deployment is a possibility at any time. That is part of the sacrifice. If you are both in the military, they will try their best not to deploy you at the same time, but if they do, they will require you to have a care plan for the kid. Before basic training- situps, pushups, run. That's pretty much it. Advice for a fellow female? Don't act like a $lut like some female servicemembers do, and you will be treated with respect. Don't whine like a little girl, pull your own weight in your shop, etc. Be someone you would want to work with. That's all I got!

Depends on which safety drive unit he's assigned to. But safety forces are approach underneath manned correct now, so deployment pace may be very prime. Expect him to be deployed a minimum of 6 months out of the 12 months. Some items are deploying for six months, again residence four months and deploying for one other 6 months. Basically, safety forces are deploying greater than any one , in any carrier are correct now.

1. Single parents cannot enlist - you would have to either get married or give up custody 100% of your child to enlist.
2. No BF's cannot cme with you
3. No you get no choice of language
4. the AF has cryptographic linguist, not Linguist
