Does the number of miles on a car matter?

I've heard that motors don't last much past 200k-250k miles. Is that true? If I wanted a car to drive across the country, would something that runs well but has over 200,000 miles do it? Or should I shoot for something with lower mileage?

Depends on how it is driven.

But commonly engines only last about 250k miles or so.

However, a used engine is only about $500 and another $600 for install.

But don't worry about driving across the country, because that does almost no wear to a car, as long as you are not trying to go over 65 mph.

It is city stop and go that wears them out, not steady highway driving.

With cross country I would worry more about things like tires, wheel bearings, brakes, etc.

The engine will do fine unless it already burns lots of oil, blows steam, etc.

On today's engines with proper care 200k is not to much. If it was an old carb motor with them kind of miles I would stay away. But it all depends on the last owners. Things like was the oil changed on time. Did they allow the car to warm up under cold weather. And where did they drive it. city or high way. You never know. If it runs well I would buy it. As long as there is no leaks. Look under the car. Look for leaks. And pop the hood and listen carefully to the engine. If a engine don't sound right you will know. You would hear knocks or taps.

The number of miles matter but also what is important is how well it was taken care of. A car with low miles that was beaten or poorly maintained will give you as much problems as a high mileage car. I would look for one with a bit lower miles that has been maintained. I have been driving the same car for 9 years and it has 155k. I have kept it well maintained and if I had to drive it across the country I feel pretty confident it would make it.

it is true in some cases, it depends on the make and model of the car, for instance a ford might not make it that far, but a toyota would do it, the car can do it that far, but with 200,000 miles you should be careful because anything can break easily if you're going to drive across the country, you should shoot for something with lower miles

I'd shoot for something that's got lower miles, but if looked after then most cars, especially diesels will smash 300,000 miles.
