getting married to a canadian in canada, i'm american?
Hi,
After talking it over with my girlfriend, we have decided to get married. I am an American, and she is Canadian.
I understand that after we get married she will have to sponsor me and wait for the processing time.
I plan on living in the states while this is happening
and moving over once I am granted citizenship. So that way I can continue working.
I am wondering though about how do I go about marrying her when I am in Canada? Is it a long lengthy process
because I am from the states? Or is it simply going down to the courthouse and signing papers and turning
it in to get registered? How do I go about doing this? I understand there could be questioning our marriage because
I am from the states.
I already have a visit set up in the end of December to see her. Is there anyway we could do it then? She lives in Ontario, btw.
It's also a same sex marriage, if that makes a difference.
I don't need a visa to visit Canada, as long as my stay there doesn't exceed 6 months, I'm fine. She shouldn't apply to sponsor me until we are married, that makes the process easier. Otherwise, what does she sponsor me as?

You will need a passport to return to the states (US law) The web site given above is very good with current information Check Ontario government site for marriage requirements. Many business sites have good info but it may not be current. There are two sets of laws you need to look at . Ontario's for the marriage and the Federal for the citizenship, visas, and immigration

Same sex marriages are legal in Canada, I perform them all the time. When you are up here visiting and getting your marriage license ask the person at the office of vital statistics or wherever you get your paperwork to point you in the right direction for immigration.
You need to pick up your paperwork 24hrs before the ceremony in Yukon and if you really love each other remember this is the start of your life together don't just go and sign the papers. make a ceremony or event out of it. Its the most important day of your life. If you don't believe that don't do it.

Same sex marriages are now legal in Ontario, so that won't affect things one way or another.
As long as both of you are adults, you can get a marriage license and be married in a church, or by someone authorized to take oaths of marriage.
As long as you are planning to return to the states after the ceremony, and go through the regular immigration channels, there should be no problems. The only times they question it is if they feel that the marriage is spurious, and taking place only to get someone into the country. So - if you have anything that verifies that this has been a long-term relationship, bring it along, just in case.

Your fiance needs to apply NOW for a partner visa for you. When the visa is granted , you will have legal resident status in Canada. You will not be given citizenship. You must wait at least 3 years to apply for citizenship.
