My wife has a cough and swollen lymph nodes. What should I do?

My wife has been coughing a lot and complaining of a sore throat for the past week and last night, her lymph nodes started swelling up. She has no fever, so I am pretty sure it is just a cold, but she is still worried about it. I have talked with her about going to the doctor for it, but we don't have insurance and I would have a hard time paying for it. I told her that all the doctor would tell her is to rest, drink lots of liquids, and take cold medicine, but she seems reluctant to trust me saying that I am not a doctor so I wouldn't know what they would say. Should I give in, take her to the doctor anyway, and spend awhile paying it off as best I can or should I just keep telling her to rest and drink liquids and wait until she gets better? Is there some other option that I haven't considered? I appreciate any advice you can give me.

Update:

I don't think she has mono because she never had a fever and hasn't had a headache. I also don't think she has strep throat because she never had a fever or chills. I am starting to get sick myself with the same symptoms as her, so I am pretty sure it is just a cold. I did forget to mention that her lower back has also been a bit sore, but that is probably unrelated.

That happens to me every single time I get sick and I've been to the doctor multiple times for it, it's nothing to worry about at all. They won't be swollen anymore once she gets better

Can your wife recall ever having had infectious mononucleosis??

I think this is more than a common cold. Since both mono and a cold are viral, there's not much to do but give supportive care and wait it out. Google the symptoms of both colds and mono and the two of you can compare her symptoms more closely. Remember that not all infections are febrile.

A cold generally lasts a week to 10 days. The worst symptoms of mono last anywhere from one to four weeks. She should be taking it easy and keeping herself away from others. If she likes, she can contact me directly with any concerns she has.

She may be developing strep throat. If that gets out of hand it can lead to rheumatic fever which can damage her heart. A doctors visit is less expensive than a hospital stay.
