By killing his best heifer, Odysseus shows that he is very determined about entering the Land of the Dead. Determination is a very good quality for a hero; it shows the lengths that he or she is willing to go for something they believe in. A quality that isn't very heroic is Selfishness. Odysseus initially went to the Land of the Dead to seek his own destiny. The only thing that I could wonder is why wasn't he making more of an effort to go home to his family, rather than seek help knowing his own fate? This leads me to believe that he was somewhat of a selfish person. Odysseus' trip to the Land of the Dead had its pro's and cons. Showing that even though you can show heroic qualities, when the time comes, you can always have some negative qualities that show through.
Throughout The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus showed many different characteristics. He showed that while proving to everyone that he can be a leader, some of his actions caused his inner self to be shown, and showed people that he's probably not the best person to look up to as a mentor.

Well, he spent like 7 years on an island with Calypso. He should have been on his way home to his wife. Not carousing with Calypso. Selfishness for sure.
