What is the fastest/most effective way of stopping onions stinging your eyes?

Forget about goggles...I mean after the onions have already attacked.

    Wash your hands with water - then wash eyes.

    Actually you could prevent them stinging your eyes by washing them in cold water before you cut them.

    Keep throwing cool water on your eyes for a minute or so. The way to stop the onions from hurting your eyes when you're chopping, is to keep running the knife under cold water.
