Losing Companions in Skyrim?

If i were to tell my companion, lets say Lydia, that we need to part ways. Would she leave and be gone forever, or would i be able to go back to whiterun keep and get her back? If they do go back to whever you found them, is it like that with all companions, or just some?

Some companions do glitch out and disappear if you part ways with them, like Illya... who'll either vanish or just not speak to you from then on. Most however go back to their points of origin. I'm not sure that its the keep where Lydia'd be found, she might have a house somewhere in town, but yar, she should still be kicking about.

If you part ways you can get them back as long as you don't already have another companion helping you. I believe they just go back to where you got them.

If you tell your companion to go away then they will go back from where they came from and you can recruit them again.

they stay where you tell them to stay and you can go pick them up when you want, and im pretty sure it is like that for every companion
