What is involved in getting a bone density test?

A couple of weeks ago I injured my foot at work. The workman's compensation doctor has reviewed the xrays and determined that there is not a visible fracture. He, however is concerned because my foot still has a lot of swelling and it is very painful to stand, walk or even move my foot. He has decided that he is going to order a bone density test. What exactly is a bone density test and what is included in this test?

A bone density test is a series of scan images which are normally done to determine if you have osteoporosis, Osteoporosis is a thinning in the density of the bones, which means that the bones tend to break easily. The scan process is completely painless and only takes five to ten minutes. All you have to do is lie still while the scanner passes over your body. The difficult part of the test is actually waiting for the results which typically take at least two weeks to get. This is because they not only develop the images but then color them to differentiate between the different levels of bone loss revealed by the scans.
