Anyone with experience with Brittany's?

Does anyone have any advise for Brittany owners? If you have previously owned a Brittany? and any upsides and downsides?

My advice to a potential first time owner? Research before you buy, know what you're getting into.

A typical Brittany is an active, intelligent, athletic hunting dog. Very people oriented, social. Needs plenty of human interaction, wants to be "part of the family". For hunters, an excellent Britt from a good hunting bloodline can run circles around most other hunting dogs, and will point all the birds their dogs missed ;).

As with any breed, the Brittany can be an ideal companion for the right person. And can be a hyperactive nightmare for someone not willing or able to meet the dog's needs. They don't necessarily "need" to be hunted, but they DO need some kind of outlet for their energy and drive. Plenty of exercise and mentally challenging activity. Many excel in obedience and agility trials. Not a dog for a lazy owner or someone unwilling to put much energy into working with a dog.

Yes, I have one and yes, she's one h*ll of a nice hunting dog. She can hunt thick cover tirelessly all day long, would run herself until she dropped if I let her. Yet she is relatively mellow in the house. Affecionate, biddable, quiet, never destructive. Couldn't ask for a nicer dog. Only downside I can think of, is the longer coat picking up every briar and cockleburr within a 10 mile radius. But it would be the same if not worse with any long haired sporting breed. I use a silicone based grooming spray on my dog that helps make most burrs and whatnot slide out rather easily, so it's no big deal :)

I own a Brittany and I work in the pet food industry. They are a wonderful, energetic breed that loves to please their owners and is very playful. They can be a bit much with their energy levels, so I would say regular exercise for at least an hour a day is required. Just be patient with them. Thy are a beautiful, happy breed though

Brittanies do best in homes where they get to go hunting once a week. They are smart and pretty dogs that need a lot of exercise (not just hunting). Go to the national breed club website and read more.

I have never owned a Brittany Spaniel, but my next door neighbor's have one. They are beautiful dogs, but super super energetic. They need a lot of exercise. Unfortunately my neighbors didn't really know what they were getting with their dog and they regret getting her (she is too high energy for them). So I would recommend getting one only if you have the time and energy to properly handle them.
