A CZ 550 in 416 Rem Mag?

What's the cheapest way to acquire a CZ 550 in .416 Rem Mag? I know their custom line has it, but's over 3 grand and I think getting one in .375 H&H and having it re-barreled would be cheaper. Does anyone have experience with this? I see used ones on the market often in .375 H&H and .416 Rigby. Is it less a hassle to just go with a .416 Rigby? I know the ballistics between .416 Remington mag and .416 Rigby are close enough, but I prefer the ammo cost and asthetics of the .416 Rem Mag.

I will be making a purchase in January, so I have time to check all my options. Is there someone out there that does several customizations on the cheap that might combo with the re-barreling?

Your help is most appreciated!

Personally, I prefer the Rigby to the Rem Mag anyway. Reloading for belted cartridges is always a hassle, and there's no reason to spend the money to get the custom rifle when a factory Rigby is ready to go. The location for the main USE for these rifles (Alaska and Africa) will also have Rigby ammo more readily available, so if you get off the plane and find out that your ammo was removed from your luggage by TSA, you can easily go find Rigby ammo, not necessarily true for Rem Mag (I highly recommend shipping your rifle and ammo ahead of time to your outfitter, rather than traveling with it).

Frankly, this whole question seems stupid to me. If you're spending the money to buy an African game rifle, in a cartridge that runs $2 a shot even if you're reloading, you shouldn't be asking questions about getting the Rem vs. the Rigby, or trying to rebarrel a .375H&H.

Again, in my personal experience (having owned a .416 Rigby CZ 550 and a Remington 700 Custom in .416 Rem, 3 different .375 H&H's, a .458 Win mag Ruger M77, and a .458 Lott Custom Mauser), I'd just go with the CZ 550 in the .416 Rigby...

Source(s): I've been shooting Dangerous/African game rifles for 15yrs, and have had the luxury to own several different cartridges and rifles for this purpose...
  • Re-barrelling will probably be at least as expensive as a new rifle.
