Need info on many programs to help elderly homeowners repair electrical and window replacement in old home. Mom relies on social security income. Need Birmingham or Alabama programs.

contact your city and county. I know that there are groups that paint homes run by the city. I know the city fixes up homes for renting out to people who can't afford a place. I also know, at least in our community, that there's a organization for women that has maintenance men on hand to fix things for seniors. There's a Department of Elder Affairs both in the state and federal level who you might want to contact and if they don't have what you need they might be able to refer you to someone or some group. Also ask your church.

Supposedly there are programs.....but for the life of me I honestly don't know where to find out. We had a story here where an 89 yr. old man lived in his fully paid for home, with an elderly wife with Alzheimer's, and a mentally disabled adult daughter. His house needed painting and his front porch fixed. He didn't have the funds or the ability to fix it. They were going to take his home away because of a new housing ordinance if he didn't comply within so many days. I mean it needed repair but it wasn't falling down. It was a 2 story home......a home he paid for.....fortunatly a reporter had the story put in the paper and volunteers came and did it for him. He was in tears he was so thankful. I find it sickening people would harrass people at such a time and take what they worked their life to own away from them.

There is no such animal in government. Look locally at your social services, seniors groups, for referral you to a program if one exists. Otherwise you can get a discount for seniors at home improvement stores. I would look for a handyman and ask if they give special rates for low-income seniors.

We are fortunate here in Scotland in that we have a voluntary organization called `Care and Repair' which is a free service for senior citizens to gain access to tradesmen of all descriptions.

we had a senior services group in our county. they published in the newspaper stories of the most in need for major repair like roofs and our friend was selected. your mom should be able to get energy assistance. these are the people who can point in the right direction.

what she said. You'll have to check with social services. Maybe a community college would have a community service requirement and would do unskilled things, like mow, rake, paint.

Call United Way. Their list of services is so long it goes beyond one computer page.
