Clueless about audio equipment/speakers, need help finding x-mas present...?

My husband's #1 passion (after me of course) is music, but all he has to listen to him MP3 player is headphones or one of those truly crappy little ipod docks w/ the horrible little speaker. I want to get some kind of speaker system that he can put his ipod into and get decent sound for the bedroom. I would like separate speakers we can mound on either side of the bed so we can get that "stereo sound" and maybe another speaker for bass? BUT I am totally confused about what I need, and the info I looked up online talks about surround sound or home theaters and 5.1 and 7.1 and all kinds of line in outputs, Blah blah blah, and a lot of it seems to be for designed more with watching movies/ playing video games in mind. Also, I do NOT want this to be a construction job, I will put nails in the wall or hang shelves but I will not cut into the wall, run lines though the ceiling, spackle anything or do any electrical work beyond plugging things in!!! Also money is a HUGE consideration! Please help me! THANK YOU.

    Your best bet is to seek out your local independent high end audio video store, as they carry the better brands of equipment and the salesmen generally have many years experience designing nicer sounding systems.

    These stores don't just carry ultra expensive equipment, most also carry some exceptional sounding budget gear as well, so don't be intimated by the higher end stores. Most of the equipment these higher stores carry are brands you may not have heard of so again put your trust in the salesmen to help you design a nice little system. You can also listen to the system yourself to help you determine the quality of system you will enjoy.

    The nice thing as well, as these systems are stand alone so they are simple to hookup, use, and don't require any special mounting or installation, other than reasonably good speaker placement.

    The chain stores (best buys etc) don't have a clue what they doing, and 90% of the gear they carry is really of very low end quality both in sound quality, and reliability.

    If money is a huge issue - you might want to go for a nice pair of Headphones. Something like a Seinhauser and perhaps a headphone amp.

    You basically dont have any amp/electronics, you dont have speakers and if you are talking about small, bookshelf speakers - you also need a subwoofer.

    You basically have nothing.

    Set a budget. Then ask for advice.

    If money were not too much of an issue - here is what I would recommend for a budget-but-decent stereo speaker system:

    * Magnapan MMG1 electrostatic panel speakers: $660

    * SVS Subwoofer or HSU Research subwoofer $800

    * Yamaha RX-V series receiver: $500

    So - a high quality set of headphones might be a better choice. Look into Seinhauser or Grado. Also look into a headphone amp because iPod's do not have enough power to give good sound.

    Hope this helps.
