1) Couldn't tell ya, sorry.
2) Needle! Piercing guns cannot be sterilized, the jewelry they use to pierce with is too dull (which means more force to get through & will result in more pain for you), the jewelry is typically not long enough to allow the piercing to swell properly, the gun can easily get stuck, the piercings will probably be crooked or uneven, and infections can get really nasty. The guns do way too much damage to the sensitive cartilage and can cause it to collapse.
3) Old enough to understand the difference between a professional body piercer & the mall.
4) No.
5) Guns suck for any piercing, but are especially dangerous when piercing cartilage. And needles pierce just as fast as the gun. I'm not sure why people seem to think the needle is a slow process, it's not.

From my personal experience from getting my cartilage piercing, mine didn't initially hurt while getting it done. It's a very sharp nipping pain, but afterwards was where the trouble started. Mine became infected for most of the year I've had it (and it's only just healed)
but to answer your questions..
1. 8/10
2. A needle is more hygienic and more professional way of getting it pierced. A gun can shatter your cartiladge which could end with very bad swelling and scarring.
3. Any professional piercing place should say you have to be 18 to do it.
4. I personally wouldn't, as they would most likely use a gun, go to a professional piercing shop as they have all the sterile equiptment and good aftercare advice :)
5. Be prepared, cartilage piercings can take uptoo a year/two years to heal (which is what happened to mine) others can take as little as 2 months.
Use a sea salt solution with lukewarm water and soak your ear twice a day for 5 mins.
If you end up getting a "keloid" which is a small red bump near or around the piercing, get some Camomile teabags which you could most likely buy in tesco's, soak the teabag and hold it for 5 mins twice a day.
Try not sleeping on the side of your cartilage or rubbing or getting hair caught in it, as this will prolong healing.
Once you feel that the pain has gone, switch your piercing to either titanium or stainless steel as new piercings are easily irritated by cheap metals, NEVER take it out when it's infected.
As you can tell I learnt a lot through my impulse piercing experience, but it's a really pretty piercing, don't let the pain put you off, once it's gone it's worth it :)

I guess it depends where about i.e. your septum hurts more than your ear! haha!
1. My helix (top of my ear) was about a 2.. I felt a slight pinch when he put the jewellery in. My conch (the really thick part in the centre of your ear) I thought would hurt like hell, but I didn't even feel it - 0 on the pain scale... I felt it quite a bit afterwards - I went to a gig and a crowd surfer kicked it really hard. It bled like hell. My whole neck was covered in blood! D:
2. NEEDLE. Gun can shatter your cartilage. With a needle, the piercing guy will use numbing creams if you want. It's a lot safer, cleaner and more accurate.
3. 18 without an adult's permission. I'm 17 and have to get my mum's permission -.-
4. NO NO NO NO. Find a professional piercing place. At Claire's, the employees just watch a 15 minute video and then go or it.
5. If you haven't had a proper piercing (not lobes) then you should eat something sugary before you go. Some people think they will be fine, but they end up queasy and light-headed. Personally, I'm fine :) Keep it clean with sterile saline solution (also used for contact lenses) or salt water basically. Try not to catch it.

1) Not at all if you get it with numbing, but it hurt less that getting my ear lobes pierced when i got it without numbing. There are loads of different places that do piercing, some will offer numbing, most wont. Numbing makes it more expensive.
2) Either; some say needle is a safer option, but a needle is slower, a gun is fast. There is this rumour about guns shattering your cartlidge, but i think that it only applies to nose piercings. I don't know whether you are asking about ear cartlidge or nose cartlage piercings.
3) 16 or under 16 with permission from parents usually.
4) Claires or anywhere else with a piercing license
5) Make sure its what you want before you get it. Things go in an out of fashion and does it fit with the job you want when your older?
Good luck

They don't hurt as much if you have it done with a needle, so if you want your cartilage pierced, so to a reputable piercer rather than Claire's. THAT would hurt. Generally speaking, if you're under 18, you need parental permission for any piercing.
