Why are people in norther parts of the world more secular?

Actually, Canada is fairly religious in comparison to the other mentioned countries. I think you mean that Western Civilization tends to be more secular. I think it's because they have been around longer, they've gone through the different stages of discrimination and superstition. Take a look at the UK, it's legally Christian, and their anthem is "God Save the Queen", but despite that, a fairly small amount are overly religious, or even Christian for that matter. America is actually slowly following suit. "No religion" is the fastest growing religious choice in America, and the only one to grow consistently, not dropping in any state. But most religions are falling in numbers of followers.

@ Mona: that's also quite true, the same source I got the "no religion is rising" info also showed that Eastern US, especially New England, is fairly secular compared to the rest of America.

It has to do with liberalism originating from Western Northern Europe and spreading migratarily to Canada and New England. Liberalism has developed into secularism over the centuries..
