The British colonies of Rupert's Land and The North Western Territory were owned by the Hudson's Bay Company under a charter from the British Government. These territories were sold to the Government of Canada under the Rupert's Land Act of 1870 on June 23, 1870. The Compnay was allowed to retain possession of it's trading posts, and was given $1,500,000 (CAD) in compensation.
