Is it correct to start a sentence with the word "and"?

Been re-reading Twilight (don't judge me! the books are actually better than the movie saga) and I noticed that Stephenie Meyer tends to use "And" at the beginning of Krist-- I mean.. Bella's.. thoughts. I was taught in grade school that it's not correct to use it in that form, but Twilight isn't the only best-selling book I've seen it used in. What are your thoughts?

Actually, it has been often said that we should not start a sentence with "and" and "because". However, in poetry and songs. there are always exceptions.

Can you remember and recognized these songs: "And I love you so. People asked me how. ....." or this song: "Because of you, there's a song in my heart"

It's their book, their creative work. They can start a sentence however they want, regardless of whether it's completely accurate to how its taught in school. Some novels don't even use punctuation!

Well, to me, it depends. When I'm in school (probably in grade 3) my teacher also taught me not to use 'and' at the beginning of the sentence unless 'you are a excellent writer...' (teachers' words!) But now, I didn't care and just used 'and' for the beginning of some of my sentences in my stories...

PS: maybe Stephenie Meyer likes to use 'and' for the beginning for her sentences... I don't know... maybe...................................................................................................................................

    Happy to help! :X

Teachers always tell you not to start a sentence with 'and' or 'but'.

But it is perfectly OK to do so (when you've left school, so you don't lose marks).

And you don't have to be a particularly brilliant writer to do so.
