well since you're a college student, I assume that you are quite a busy guy, so I suggest that with an $800 budget, you could just get a pre built PC at newegg just like this:
CyberpowerPC Gamer Ultra 2086 Desktop PC Phenom II X4 965(3.4GHz) 8GB DDR3 1TB HDD Capacity NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 (1 GB) Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit - $830 at newegg
link : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...
I know that it is over your intended budget, but i assure you that this build can play all games in high - max settings and the parts are all ideal, 1TB HDD, 8 gb RAM, and a 3.4 ghz 4 core processor, that is why I think it is currently out of stock bec definitely many are buying this kind of build :D
You also have to dish out an extra $100 for the monitor I guess. In short, it may seem a bit expensive from your current intended budget, but in the long run you would realize that it was worth your money bec this set up would be good for several years to come especially in gaming :D (future proof as they say here in yahoo answers)
BTW : My video card is also a gtx 560 and if a PC is great for gaming that just means it is practically good for everything else that a PC can do.
