Talking about over 500,000pounds to be inherited. If the money were invested in business assets would this be exempt from inheritance tax. Also, what kind of business assets?

Inheritance tax is applied on the estate before the actual amount is handed over.
If you are looking for options to avoid inheritance tax on a future inheritance then the answer in not on here but with a specialist advisor.
Your solicitor can probably suggest a name if his company does not specialise in this area.

Tax is deducted from the estate before bequests get handed out. The regulations around transfers of property before death are much tighter now. Very very much tighter.
