1 = 1/2 + 1/6 + 4x where x is each child's portion
x = 1/4 (1 - 1/2 - 1/6)
= 1/4 (1/2 - 1/6)
= 1/4 (3/6 - 1/6)
= 1/4 (2/6)
= 1/4 (1/3)
= 1/12

1/2 convert to 3/6 + 1/6 = 4/6 leaving 2/6 convert again to 4/12 then divide by 4 would be 1/12 for each kid.
