Global Warming, Dimming, EMP? We are so doomed, right?
If our poor planet is clobbered by an ElectroMagnetic Pulse (whether man-made or sun-made), then most electronic micro-devices get fried, right? And so fossil fuel combustion plummets, right? Therefore, global dimming due to air pollution ceases, right? And so the earth warms up even more, right? And even though we stop burning fossil fuels, the excess carbon dioxide of the last 100 years persists, and will continue to cause more global warming, right? Fun stuff, right? NOT!

If a catastrophic EMP were to happen, most fossil fueled power plants could be jury rigged to be operated manually. An EMP would be a setback in the fight against global warming, because the manufacture of solar and wind power equipment is dependent of high tech and nuclear power plant could not operate safely on manual control. However, I do not know if there is any scientific basis to believe that such an EMP could happen without nuclear explosions.

Accepting a climate sensitivity of 3K/2xCO2, at our current CO2 levels we would expect about 1.45ËC warming total to come to pass. That would be about another 0.7ËC warming over what we have seen (3*log_2(391/280)); it actually wouldn't be too bad, I recall that the rough threshold for many of the damaging impacts is about 2ËC of warming, though I've occasionally heard somewhat lower.
