Can you go into the military if you are not married & have a dependent?

My little sister is 18 & her & her boyfriend just had a baby in October. They are telling us that the Army told him he can not enlist unless they are married. Is this true? We want them to get married but he just proposed last night & they are feeling they have to be married by the end of the year to enlist.

He is considered a single parent now and that disqualified him. When they get married he will be eligible again. Even if they just have a courthouse wedding now and save the big wedding for later all he needs is a valid marriage license.

They do not have to get married for him to join, BUT he will have to sign over full custody of the child as single parents cannot enlist in the military. They would also require a DNA test paid for by them to have the child listed as his dependent therefore eligible for a Military ID, Tricare and access to use some base facilities. Then he would get BAH-diff if there is a court ordered child support of $200 or more, the amount is around $200 a month. He would be required to live in barracks as he is considered single unless he is married.
