Can you go into the military if you are not married & have a dependent?
My little sister is 18 & her & her boyfriend just had a baby in October. They are telling us that the Army told him he can not enlist unless they are married. Is this true? We want them to get married but he just proposed last night & they are feeling they have to be married by the end of the year to enlist.

he would have to give up custody of his daughter, which is difficult, to say the least
and ? they might not be entitled to benefits or any life insurance if something happened to him - it would go to his parents - his next of kin (unless he specifically made note that his illegitimate daughter would get them)
he would have to prove his is up to date on child support
his girlfriend could not get benefits, shop on base, or have access to his accounts or military housing
if they are married, they get extra money for being married - from the military - for housing
that is why they need to marry
it is just easier for everyone concerned

He can enlist, but he has to give her full custody of the child. The child will still be eligible for military benefits and he'll still get a stipend for her. He will have to be current on child support, with documentation as well.

He can enlist. She just can not live on base with him, nor can she get any military spousal support.

He can enlist..
But she cannot live on base with him or receive any spousal benefits if they are not married.
