In China, when writing, is it done from left to right, top to bottom or how?

Older or more traditional pieces of writing are written right to left from top to bottom.
Nowadays though quite a lot of Chinese writing is done left to right, like in English and other Germanic languages.

Two style are commonly used:
It can be written left to right, going from top line to bottom line (a more modern style, just like Western writing)
-OR-
It can be written top to bottom in columns, going from right to left (an older and more traditional style that is still seen quite regularly in newspapers and books).

in the past, it was written from right to left in columns; but now it is written from left to right in rows.
