I love coffee cake, but my family won't eat it because of the nuts. Will it work right if I leave out the nuts?
Should I replace them with something else?
How about chocolate chips? What else?

Yes you can, but of course it will lack its nutty taste but it will still be a coffee cake just make sure to put these ingredients in it:
150g caster sugar
150g butter or margarine
3 eggs
150g self raising flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp hot water
1 tbsp instant coffee (add more if you like it strong)
For The Icing (If you want icing)
225g icing sugar
100g butter or margarine
1 1/2 tbsp instant coffee
1 tbsp hot water

I have never put nuts in a coffee cake for the past 50 years. Add what you like the cake won't mind.

Why should't you leave out the nuts ? It's coffee cake, not nut cake. You don't have to put anything else in unless you particularly want to, the add-ons will not affect the baking of the cake, only the flavour.

There are many recipes for coffee cake, many with no nuts. Personally, I would leave in the nuts and eat it all myself, LOL.

OF COURSE! It's coffee cake, not coffee and nut cake!
If you want some crunch with no nuts what about nice biscuits broken up (biscotti? - Traditionally drunk with coffee in Italy...)

White, milk or dark chocolate chips, raisins or sultanas would all be nice instead. You don't have to put anything in instead though.
