What is High School like in Canada?

My family is planning to move there next year. I am currently living in Asia, and yes, I am Asian. We are planning to live in Whistler, BC. Can you tell me what it is like that? How hard is it?

Do you think I should just stay here or recommend me moving there?

Oh btw, I am now in grade 10. If i move there, I would be in grade 11.

People who are studying in Canada, what would be a good place to go in for high school? Or is Whistler fine?

Whistler is primarily a ski resort. The town itself is fairly small (about 10,000 permanent residents plus an equal number of temporary workers). Most of the activities resolve around tourism -- skiing, hiking, shopping, restaurants, etc. It is situated about two hours car drive north of Vancouver. It is also a rather expensive place to live. Finding a part time job is also usually fairly easy if you live in the area.

It only has one secondary school. Like most Canadian public schools it is pretty good quality. Further, since most of the permanent community is wealthy it has some pretty amazing facilities, world class views, and of course a ton of recreational activities. Lots of students are from outside the country. Vancouver itself has a fair number of people of Asian decent (about 24%). The school has a web-site, so you can read up on activities, mission statements, classes, etc. The education itself is standardized across British Columbia.

Whether you would find it hard, I don't know. They'll typically test you prior to assigning you to assigning you classes.

I don't know why you wouldn't go if you have the choice and your parents can afford to live there. You get to remain with your family, learn about another country, learn to snowboard, improve your English, etc.

I'm not sure what you mean by "what would be a good place to go in for high school?". If your parents are in Canada under a work permit, they are usually restricted in where they can live based upon their job offer. Job offers for foreign workers are so rare that few people have the luxury of picking which community to live in. Even most Canadians typically move to whatever community they can find a job in -- baring being extremely established or having a profession such as a doctor, nurse, etc. For public schools you are limited to those in the community in which you live. Even for private schools, there is a limited number one can realistically drive their children to each morning in most cities.

If you parents have a job offer in Whistler... they pretty much have to live there and that will limit the schools in their district to one. That said... schools throughout BC offer the same courses and general educational level. Canada ranks #3-#5 in most world education rankings. Whistler Secondary is probably one of the better schools in the province and certainly one of the better communities to live in.
