Lord and Vassal relationship?

The lord/vassal relationship was one of mutual loyalty. The vassal vowed to serve the Lord. If he held lands, he paid taxes. He served in battle alongside his lord, and if he had men of his own he provided a set levy to the lord at times of war. Depending on his rank, a vassal might even be given the lord's son or sons to train up in the military arts in preparation to being made a knight.

The Lord's duty was to reward the loyalty given to him. He gave gifts of lands, or money. He gave out booty won during warfare. He also provided protection to his vassals, coming to their aid if attacked. He might take in a vassal's son to train as the vassal might do to his son. In short, each did for the other what they could to make both stronger.

This system best applied to the chivalric and noble classes. A lord owed less to his commoner vassals, and they owed him more. They still deserved the protection of their lord, but it would be rare for a commoner to be granted land or even money. And the commoners would still be expected to pay their taxes and serve in levies. So the relationship was one designed mostly for and by the ruling class.

Lords own the land which is the single most important resource in an agrarian society. Vassals work the land, produce the food, and pay tax to the lord, in exchange for his protection and access to his land.
