Did you grow up without Christmas? Or are you an atheist parent who doesn't celebrate the holidays?

What do you do instead during this time of year?

My husband and I are both atheists, but we've recently had a son. And we are trying to figure out how we want to celebrate with him on this level. Neither one of us particularly enjoy Christmas and for the last decade we usually go on a vacation somewhere. But I don't want my son to feel like he is missing something....

Just looking for some ideas and feedback. Thanks!!

Also if you grew up without Christmas - how do you think that colored your view on the season now that you are older?

Thanks!

I think that you really need to understand that Christmas is a Pagan holiday. It has nothing to do with Christianity (originally), Christians wanted to find something to celebrate during this time because they didn't want to be apart of a non-religious holiday and so they started celebrating Christ's birthday the same time but in reality Christ was born in the late summer. So if you really think about it....this technically is your holiday. However if you think it's gotten too religious then search up the pagan origins of the holiday and celebrate that. St. Nicholas was a priest I believe who snuck into people's homes and dropped off gifts for the less fortunate...he again was a priest or something but it wasn't that he was a priest that got his tradition added. There are Christians out there who don't believe in presents this time of year because in reality...it's not what their holiday is about. All in all it has the same name but in reality it's not one holiday it is two.

Anyway, my thoughts for you is either accept the winter solstice celebration, which is the pagan side OR make your own family holiday around this time of year. Choose your traditions for your family this time of year and add some presents and there you go! :)

  • We aren't christian, we don't go to church

you can still have the tree and presents, and stuff, but you don't have to do all the rest of stuff.

    good luck!
