Track and field? mile times?

I want to do track and field. i love to run even if i'm not the fastest. I'm a sophomore. and i've never done track before, but my friends have. i'm thinking of doing relays, sprints, or middle distances. I'm working 4 days a week, because the other days i honestly can't. but soon i should be up to 5 days a week. I try to get in about 2-3 miles when i run. I always thought i'd do hurdles but i've tried it in P.E. and i cant haha. I'm not interested in doing any field events. I'm working on my mile every chance i get. i've lowered my time to finally get about 10min. buts thats really the first time i've run a mile in like a year.

what should be the time i should aim for? like 6-7 minutes?

and what event do u think would be best for me? (relays, sprints, or the middle distance (800-2miles))

i have about like 2 months to work on this.

Update:

i've also paced myself on a tredmill. and i probably will start running outdoors late on the days i might be somewhat busy afterschool.

workout fridays,saturdays,sundays,mondays.

Academic team- tuesdays and thursdays. (I can miss one of the days)

Yearbook-wednesdays (will be able to skip some days)

Update 2:

i dont mind the pain. usually i just push myself to run further. hahaaa so pain with running is not a problem for me. i just need to remember to stretch....

Update 3:

i guess i'm willing to try hurdles again. and i'm trying to work everyday. i really only started running again like 2 days ago.

Sprints because i did sprints, and it built up my stamina so i was able to sprint longer, faster. U should do distance next year if u think u will be able to handle it. Also aim fir about 7-8 minutes.

    Hi :)

So I'm in eighth grade and last year my best mile time was a little bit under 7 minutes, I think 6:58 to be exact. That wasn't so good, so as a sophomore I would say a ten minute is going to get you not so far.

I recommend the 400, If you are a suckish sprinter as far as speed goes but can still sprint for a while, then you'd do pretty good in the 400. It's what a lot of beginners try. You would have to work on sprints a little more then distance, and definitely build endurance. Try sprinting, full out, for a minute. You probably won't be able to (that's a very hard thing to do) but the closer you get the better you will be at the 400. You track your progress by how long you could all out sprint for. Then once you stop improving there, you could work on pacing yourself, if that makes sense.

Good luck and keep running :)

if your running 2-3 miles you might want to go out for distance or the 800. But it really just depends on what your interested in. If you like pacing and running distances go for distance. If you hate distance running go for sprinting. I personally am weird and i do both distance (1 and 2 miles) and i do sprinting (100 and 300 hurdles) Yes hurdles is considered sprinting. But don't give up on hurdles based on PE. It takes actual drills and running team repeatedly to get it down. The first couple times you do it you feel like a spaz. and if your like me, you fall a bunch. The mile and 2 mile are pretty fast though. I run a 5:45 for 1 mile and 11:50 for the girls 2 mile. But good luck, and if you really don't know what you want to do just spend the first week of the season trying out everything. You'll find something you like.Good Luck!

Start working on running hard not just for distance,a 10 minute mile is quite bad. Lower it at least 3 minutes, Im sure you can if you try harder and don't stop. Also work on full out sprinting 100m-400m

If you hate pain and that feeling of self-achievement, go with sprinting. If not, (wo)man up and run distance.
