Wireless Router Question/Problem?

I'm trying to help a friend of mine who is having a problem with her signal from her wireless router. For example, I'm on AT&T DSL 6.0 My speed is 100.0 kbps. When I was on dial-up my speed was 49.2kbps. A dial-up server, The highest speed you can get is 53.something. Her speed is 54kbps. Just slightly above dial-up. Shouldn't she have a better speed than this? If so, Is there a way I can help speed it up? All together she is only about 10 to 15 ft from her router. 20 max. on the same floor.

Update:

Sorry, I meant to type MBPS. Right now mine is 100mbps. Her's is only 54MBPS through her router. Seems slow to me. At 54mbps she may as well be on dial up. Mine is way faster than hers.

I would start by hooking it up to the Ethernet port and check it wired first before you get to crazy with it. It just might be her service.

Well, there's two things wrong with your question here. First of all, when looking at your speeds (100 and 54), those should be measured in Mbps, not Kbps. When you have a wired connection to a broadband device, your computer shows that you have a 100 Mbps connection. When you have a wireless connection to a Wireless-G device, your computer shows that you have a 54 Mbps connection. Secondly, neither of these speeds, 100 Mbps or 54 Mbps, is your actual internet speed. You said it yourself, you only pay for 6.0 Mbps, so there's no way you could be getting 100 Mbps. To find out your true internet speed, you need to do a speed test at http://www.speedtest.net/

Wireless routers are bad for dialup because wifi signal is not as strong as a cable so there a two thnigs she can do

1 get a ethernet cable for her computer

2 get rid of dialup for something faster because no one uses dialup anymore
