Why does my dog have an oily patch of fur in the middle of her back?
I thought it was because of her flea medication and inadequate baths. She is 12 years old and this has never happened before. However, she went to the groomer and was very clean-- for two weeks. I made sure I put the flea medication between her shoulders last week and not in the middle of her back. Now she is oily in the same spot. Her skin looks fine, just oily. The only change in her life is a switch from frontline plus to a generic flea med and she had a fluid filled cyst on her throat aspirated recently. I do not know how long she had the cyst, so I cannot say if the problems coincided.

It's most likely the medication. Depending on the brand and dosage you had given, her, it is likely the cause for the oily skin.

If there is like a circular almost sore looking area around the perimeter of the patch of hair missing she may have a staph infection, my dog has picked them up on several occasions, they are easy and relatively affordable to treat, just a couple weeks on antibiotics, but if it doesn't look like a sore than she might be allergic to something and pulling the fur out herself.

It happens with the spot on medications sometimes. Don't know why it doesn't happen every time.
