Misplaced IRS refund check. We had it before I went into the hospital. When I returned home..it was nowhere?

Wife decided to clean the house while I was hospitalized. When I asked about it upon my return home, all I heard was "I don't know where it is!"

Well. if it is truly a misplaced check then the IRS will replace it.

However, if the check was stolen or cashed by spouse then you might have an action against the bank that cashed it. A bank isn't suppose to cash or even deposit a Federal Income Tax refund check issued in two names without both people being present and seeing proof of identification. I don't care if they went to preschool with you...those are the rules! But, sadly they aren't followed very often.

Is your spouse actively searching for the check? If not that is a huge hint....just saying.

I hate to be the one that says it but she probably cashed it.

    Hope this helps.

The IRS will assist you in obtaining a replacement check for a refund check that is verified as lost or stolen.

The IRS will have you and your wife fill out and file a form 3911 to start with for this purpose before they will reissue you another REFUND check to replace the original one that is now missing at this time in your life.

Take the original tax forms and schedules with you and your spouse and go to your local IRS office and ask them very nicely and politely if they can assist you and give you some information and help you to understand what this problem is that you are having and what you NEED to know and what you should DO about it at this point in time.

May be they can give you some good face to face advice on what your next step should be and be sure to thank them very nicely and politely for taking the time to help you with this matter.

It could have gotten thrown away somehow or still be inthe house. Call IRS they probably will have to put a trace on it to verify it hasn't been cashed and if not cashed cancel and replace iit.

Call the IRS and tell them you lost it. You'll be given instructions as to what form you must fill out in order to receive a replacement.
