2003 Chevy Silverado. On my way to work today my oil pressure gauge was very eractic.?

It kept going from 0 to 80 with no real consistency, but never staying in between there, always all the way up or all the way down. Up to 80, down to 0 the whole way into work. To be honest i am overdue on my oil change. Could it be as simple as changing oil and filter? Oil sending unit? Please help i am very worried that if i drive it home i will blow the engine.

Three possibilities. Low oil level, so the pump will pick up all of the oil in the crankcase, and when there isn't any more the pressure will drop. Solution: add oil (check the oil at least once a week whether it's due for an oil change or not). Second possibility a bad sending unit. This measures oil pressure and send the info to the gauge. Solution: replace the sending unit. Third possibility the oil pump is failing. Solution: replace the oil pump. If it continues to bounce after adding oil, then you need to investigate the other two.

Most likely it is a bad oil pressure sender, or a bad receiver in the in dash gauge. Start with the oil pan sensor, it is easy to get to, but first, check the oil, make sure you are not a couple quarts low.

My bet would be on a bad oil level sensor. It's screwed in to the side of the oil pan. Check the wire to make sure it's connected and not broken. Drain the oil, remove the old switch, install the new one and refill oil.
