Metal Fans: Enslaved vs Nocte Obducta?

Two progressive black metal bands(now), who i feel are two of the best these days. One obviously a lot more well known than the other, but doesn't take away from the style each plays. Nocte Obducta is a German band, who like Enslaved started out abit more aggressive and pure black metal, but have evolved to a more progressive style...Nocte Obducta with a more melancholy sound where as Enslaved is abit more aggresive imo

Here are a couple songs from each band

Nocte Obducta:

Der Regen

Atme (my personal favourite of theirs...great mixture of riffs and atmospheric sections)

Enslaved

Ethica Odini

Fusion Of Sense And Earth

MQ: Ignoring their earlier work (especially since most people are unfamiliar with Nocte Obducta), which band do you prefer?

MQ2: any other bands that fit the mold of these two bands you want to share?

Update:

***Peace Sells: yeah, i'd agree as a whole Enslaved is a better band as Nocte first albums aren't as good as Enslaved. However, if i were to just compare their albums which are more progressive, I tend to prefer Nocte Obducta's more. Axioma Ethica Odini, was really good but i didn't really like Vertebrae and Ruun and Isa were a bit hit and miss...some great songs...some not so good

Update 2:

**hey Brian!!, how was movie, did you get the pleasure to watch inception?

Update 3:

***Peace Sells: Have you heard of Agrypnie? it was formed from basically Nocte Obducta after they split up.

and...Nocte Obducta reformed this year and put out an album...i'm abit disappointed so far, but need to listen more

Black Metal Tuesday with Owen! fantastic, next is movie night with my sister, I predict some Christopher Nolan film probably Inception because she knows how much I HATE it! =P

    Nocte Obducta:

Der Regen - nice work, I particularly liked the choice of chords used in this song. it had some Jazz roots in it, good song.

Atme - yeah good song Owen, even though I felt it moved along like a rusty squeezebox, it is still pretty good, it has some cool tricky time changes. as I was listen to this song an aura of Pagan Wicca mist moved about my house it just started flowing right out of an antique genie bottle I have had for sometime now.

kind of long but good song nonetheless.

    Enslaved

Ethica Odini - I really liked the electronic experimentation at the beginning, I didn't really care much for the dirty vocals, it sounded like he was trying to do an Angela Gossow but forgot to drink a 12 pack of Monster Energy drinks. perhaps he should of slammed a few before recording session he might have come closer, his clean vocals are pretty good though.

Fusion of Sense and Earth - pretty good song, good listening.

    MQ: Nocte Obducta

MQ2: not at the moment bro, gotta get ready for movie night. :D

Cheers Owen, and Thanks as always! :D

    Edit:

hey Owen, no I was only half right it was The Dark Night instead. =/

  • Alright! I remember you were the one who introduced me to Nocte Obducta..that was quite sometime ago..i loved the band instantly! I have 3 of their albums but i've to say Nektar II is by far their greatest work..Nektar I is darker and proggier than II i think..but the arrangements in II is really superb..

But if you're going to compare them to Enslaved..well..i feel sad for Nocte Obducta...Enslaved's discography is stellar! Their last 5 albums have been really really good..i know u might be a bigger fan of "Vikingligr veldi"..but i really like the way they've incorporated prog elements in their last 5 albums..very cool..

So if u ask me to choose between the 2..just because of the vastness and epicness of Enslaved's catalogue..ill go with Enslaved!

    MA2 : Hmm..u mean progressive Black Metal?..

    How about Agalloch's latest album..

    or..Shining's (Sweden) "V - Halmstad"

Oh..and i'd like to add Opeth too..their albums Morningrise and My Arms Your Hearse have black metal elements imo..

    Enslaved all the way...

Also check out Absu and Wolves in the Throne Room. Absu feels to me like Blackened thrash at times and WITTR is VERY proggy black metal. Listen to a wide selection from their catalog to get the best idea about who they are.
