    -7 = Y + 12

    SUBTRACT 12 ON EACH SIDE

    -19 = Y

    YOU HAVE TO BALANCE THE EQUATION SO "Y" IS BY ITSELF

  • 9 years ago

    y is a variable

    subtract 12 from both sides

    -7=y+12

    -12 -12

    -19=y+0

    -19=y

    y is a variable. It is a number that makes the equation a true statement. To solve for y, you have to "get y by itself" by performing opposite operations on both sides of the equation.

    First step: subtract a 12 from both sides.

    -7 - 12 = y + 12 - 12

    Second step: Subtract the numbers accordingly.

    -19 = y + 0

    Therefore, -19 = y.

    To check that y is -19, plug it back into the equation.

    -7 = y + 12

    -7 = -19 + 12

    -7 = -7.

    This is a true statement, therefore it is the correct solution.

    -7=y+12

    move y to the left and 7 to the right:

    -y = 7+12

    -y = 19

    Since y cannot be - so we multiply it by - again:

    (-) -y = (-) 19

    y = -19

    OR

    Simply move 12 to the right in order to make y the subject

    y = -7-12

    y = -19

    Either way y = -19 :)

    well think of y as a number and because you don't know y, you need to isolate it in order for you to find the value so...

    -7 = y+12

    -7-12 =y subtract 12 from y so the right side will be equal to 0 what you do on the right side, you

    must also do the same for the left side

    -19 = y <----------------that's your answer

    hope this helps :)

    -7=y+12

    subtract 12

    -7-12=y

    -19=y

    You just leave y alone. That's the answer.

    Switch the 12 over to the other side this becomes

    -12 -7 = y

    -19=y

    When you move something over, it becomes the opposite such as +12 becomes -12 and *12 becomes /12.

    -19 because if there is a negative plus a positive and the negative is higher it will be negative.
