Metal Fans: Technical Black Metal Supremacy?

Black metal is never normally really associated with technical skill although there are definitely bands that are more than proficient. Some however seem to stand out abit more, and one of those bands imo is Abgott. I think at times when a BM band gets too "technical" they tend to sound more like death metal than Black metal, but I feel like Abgott still has that black metal "sound"

MQ: thoughts on the band/sound?

MQ2: is a black metal band allowed to be technical?

MQ3: What are some other technical BM bands you like?

BQ: Abgott also made it big time...as you can see in this commercial

Update:

***The Brain, yup...posted the commercial once before and you were one of the few who answered then :)

Update 2:

***Brian: hehe, yeah the video is definitely cheesy and over the top. you're right...most tech death bands are more technical than this, but i do think that in order for them to keep that black metal sound..they still need to keep some of the tremelo picking. Also, if were to listen to the 3rd link...at about 1:50, that sounds fairly technical to me (of course you are the expert, so wouldn't disagree)...but I do think this is moreso than most Black metal bands out there

Update 3:

***and yes...always appreciate the entertaining answers!

Update 4:

***狼 Lord Frieza 雨: yup Sacramentum is one of my favourite bands...Far Away from the Sun is outstanding

Update 5:

**Nekrolord: I agree, it takes skill to create the black metal sound...in this case i was going for the more traditional technical ability

Hi Owen, don't have a lot of time pretty busy at the moment otherwise I would be more than happy to give 5 or 6 paragraphs to keep you entertained for a little while =P

first, I found the video a little comical, no disrespect on Black Metal culture but many of the gimmicks are just down right funny. the lead vocalist looks like a Gene Simmons, King Diamond and Marilyn Manson hybrid. there are indeed technical elements in the music, but I still don't think it's as technical to be put in technical death metal or even technical black metal.

in my opinion I would just consider them another EXTREME Black Metal band. yes there are difficult blast beats, I heard and well saw some 8th to 16th note arpeggio picking patterns one was 16th notes with some extended tapping technique there. there is a lot of extreme tremolo picking going on but to be honest the guitarists didn't impress me anymore than Andy LaRocque or Pete Black back in the days of Them and Conspiracy, perhaps even The Eye.

what you have there is a more technical Mayhem and throw some Andy and Pete with a touch of King Diamond make up, Marilyn Manson grey contact lenses and some Gene Simmons red corn syrup and there you have Abgott. However, I can appreciate the talent there. I guess I made time to write up an entertaining answer there for you.

Cheers Owen! and thanks for sharing! :D

    Edit:

haha, Okay I can meet you half way and find technical black metal acceptable, but I had to make it fun just for the sake of a civil and appropriate argument. ah, I just know my music theory you're still the black metal expert around here buddy :)

    Edit:

yeah @1:50 is pretty dang sick!

Hahaha that commercial wa hella funny!! Kinda strange seeing a Black Metal band on TV no?

On to the band. Very technical drumming, considering this is a Black Metal band. I agree with you that the band still retains the atmosphere so characteristic to Black Metal. The image and the lyrics I'm not a fan of... the vocals are not bad.

Also there some quiet interesting parts, seems like this band, despite not objecting to having a little fun actually know their music and integrate different styles. Most definitely not another generic band - just listen to "Experiment In Evil" some quiet interesting parts which make this album stand out. The marriage of experimental Black metal and Technical drumming pulls of some really interesting stuff, I'm impressed :D

MQ: What was the question again...?

MQ2: Sure, I found the technical drumming aspect of Black to be fascinating, although I'd prefer to keep it low in stuff like Agallorch and other Avant garde or shoe gaze Black.

MQ3: Already mentioned I'm new to Death/ Black metal so I'll go with this band I stumbled across ~

    Sacramentum - Fog´s Kiss

Not sure if you know them...? I like them quiet a bit :D

I would say, that every black metal band is technical, in it's own way. Because it takes a certain technique to create the "style" of black metal.

MA: I've heard better. The imagery is so cheesy.

    MA2: Yes.

    MA3: Immortal.

Oh yes Abgott and the toshiba ad lol

MQ: Kronos Cosmic Throne - I am not to fond of the vocals on this song. The instrumentals thought were pretty solid.

Experiment In Evil - The vocals aren't too bad in this one , not as annoying. I enjoyed this song a little more.

Church Of Necrophilism - YES, this is it. This one is my favorite of the three , some wicked guitar work done in this. The vocals are just right for me.

Hmm... I think it is time I start listening to these guys. Thanks O!

    MQ2: No , doen't exist.

MQ3: Sorry , I am the wrong person to ask about this.
