What counts as 'moderate exercise'?
I'm looking at adopting/buying a dog (I have another question in which I've asked about specific breeds) and I was just wondering what 'moderate exercise' means?
Basically, most of the dog books/care sheets/online articles and breed selectors just state 'This dog will be happy with moderate exercise' but never do they say what that counts as - I was sort of hoping that a 'moderate exercise' dog would be happy with between an hour and a half and 2 hours a day but I'm unsure.
(Dogs that I've been told are 'moderate exercise dogs' included golden retrievers, Springer spaniels, Weimeraners, German Shorthaired pointers, Boston terriers and Shelties - is this right?)
thanks

I agree that boston terriers and even shelties could be considered moderate exercise breeds. But of the rest of your list weimaraners and German shorthaired pointers are extremely high-energy breeds.
Moderate exercise is open to interpretation and its not an exact science. For example, I'd say a greyhound is a dog who needs moderate exercise - they'd be happy with a good walk of about 1 hour per day. Two hours per day is a higher energy dog, but they usually also need a good game of ball/frisbee, tug as well as training to exercise their minds.
Goldens that aren't from field lines could be moderate exercise dogs, same with springers.

Well Springer spaniels, Weimeraners, German Shorthaired Pointers, GSD's, etc. are all very high energy dogs. Moderate exercise (around say an hour or so a day) just doesn't cut it.
A lot also depends on the quality of the exercise - two hours walking round the park or couple of hours open countryside running. Big difference.
If your very active go for one of these breeds, if you want a dog to trot alongside on the leash pick something smaller.
Old rule of thumb to remember - if you give 'em an hour one day they can do two the next, and so on.

Some of those breeds you posted are not my idea of *moderate exercise.* It has to do with the breed AND the individual dog. A mutt mixed with high energy breeds will most likely need more than *moderate exercise*.
I see moderate as a nice walk around the neighborhood. If the dog enjoys fetching, some time doing that.
My American Pit Bull Terrier and my daughter's Golden Retriever spent 3 hours practically non-stop swimming in our pool last weekend. That was *moderate* exercise for them. They were up for some serious flirt poling after that.

means they will be happy with an hour a day on the lead walk, or 30 minutes off the lead.
those are pretty much minimums, but it depends on the dog size.
