  • sewing pattern for form fitting laptop bag?

    Hi everyone :)

I'm looking for a sewing pattern for a laptop bag. But, I want to be a really good fit - slimline and structured I guess, something like this http://www.etsy.com/listing/105247559/messenger-ba...

Does anyone have a link to such a pattern - free is preferable, but I don't mind paying for the right one :)

    Thanks!

  • Engineered antibodies and immunotherapy?

    hey everyone,

just doing a bit of reading around the use of engineered antibodies but the terminology seems to be interchangeable. Do all immunotherapies use engineered antibodies? And secondly, how do engineered antibodies work?

References would be awesome if you have any,

    Thanks!

  • What is the best all round smartphone - HTC, Samsung or Apple?

I'm looking for a new smartphone - it must be unlocked as I already have a sim only plan but I'm not sure what to choose. In my last question I limited my budget but I'd rather just get the best phone possible as I'll be keeping it for a fair number of years. So I'd like to know what the best smartphone currently is, taking into account the unlocked price of the phone and what I get for my money as such. So I'd like my phone to have:

*A good camera - with panorama mode, preferably 8 megapixels but at least 5

*A good battery life - Will do 8-6 with some texting and a bit of music, maybe some light web browsing

*A decent music player - it will be replacing my iPod nano

*Good antenna and call quality - really, the signal in my area is patchy on all networks, so my biggest concern is a good antenna (no point in having a great phone if I can't use it!)

*Good design - I know this is subjective but still

*Good value for money (ie. if there's a phone that does everything I need and more then I'll pay the price for it, but if there's a cheaper one that does the same things then I'd choose that one over the other)

OS wise I'm not bothered. I've used Android and iOS recently and like them both. Phone wise I've had an iPhone 3GS and a HTC One V recently so any phone that is better than those. But some phones that I particularly liked are the HTC one S, Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the iPhone 5 - which would be the best choice out of these (and why)?

    Thanks!

  • Best sim free phone for under £300?

I have a sim only phone contract and I'm looking for a phone to go with it, but I'm not sure what the best one is that I can get for my money. My budget is £300 or under and the phone must be unlocked.

I'd like it to have a good camera (at least 5MP) preferably with panorma mode and some funky effects. It must have a decent music player as I am condensing all my gadgets into one. And to that end, I'd like it to have at least 16GB storage (I had a HTC one V which is loved but 4GB just isn't enough) I'd like it to be fairly small - anything smaller than the HTC One X or Galaxy Note is good.

I would prefer it to run android but iOS and windows are fine too. I do quite a lot of web browsing/emailing on my phone so something that is decent for that and has an integrated ability to share photos etc to Facebook would be great. And finally, I text a lot so just something that is easy to text on. Is this possible for under £300?

Does anyone have any suggestions? :)

  • Will a HP mini 210 run Puppy Linux or CrunchEee?

I'm looking at getting the HP Mini 210-1012ea netbook and I'd like to run a version of linux rather than windows 7 starter - will my little netbook work well 'out of the box' with a version of linux like Puppy linux or CrunchEee?

  • Eee Pad Transformer or Galaxy Tab?

    Hi guys,

After debating with the other half, we have decided that a tablet would be quite useful as we travel together a lot and it would be good to watch moves, play games and listen to music on. But, I also need to be able to take it to uni with me to make notes. Now I already have a good laptop, but it's too big and heavy to carry around with me all day. So I'd like a tablet that has good battery life and a good screen etc, but most importantly I need a keyboard for some light note making (nothing major as I'll use my laptop for that) and I need to it to be easy to read my textbooks on (I have a kindle for that currently but I'm selling it as I need something with a word processor on it).

Now I know that there are keyboards for both of these tablets, but the desktop dock for the galaxy tab isn't portable, so would a bluetooth keyboard case work anywhere near as well? Also, I quite like the size of the 7" Tab as an E-reader, but would the 10.1" screen be much better to type on?

Overall, which do you think is a better tablet?

    Thanks :)

  • Netbook or Tablet for uni?

I'm going into my final year at uni and I'm looking for something very small and lightweight to keep with me most of the time so I can do bits of work whenever I get the chance.

I have a very capable laptop but it's too big and heavy to keep with me (hence why I'm looking for something smaller) but I'm stuck between getting a tablet or a netbook.

During the week I'd be using it on and off most days for a bit of light word processing but mostly reading textbooks, journals etc. I also travel a lot every weekend so I'd like something that I can take on the train with me to do a bit of work, play some games (simple ones like angry birds) and read some books on.

But I'm not sure whether I'd be better off with a little netbook like an Asus eee PC or a tablet with either a keyboard dock or case (like the Asus Transformer?).

    Any suggestions would be great!

    Thanks,

    But I'm not sure whether

  • Losing weight and protein shakes?

    Hi,

I'm a little confused regarding protein shakes - I have a good healthy diet for the most part (although I admit I tend to snack a little too often) and I go to the gym around 4 times a week to do roughly 40min cardio and 20min stretching and weights.

I'm trying to lose weight and so far it is slowly working, but I just wondered if protein shakes might be beneficial? I don't necessarily want to build muscle to a visible level but I know that muscle helps you lose weight so with that sort of workout and that goal in mind, would they be beneficial. If so, is it better to have them before or after a workout (I tend be very very hungry after a workout so could I use the shake then?).

Just to clarify actually, I'm not trying necessarily to lose weight, rather, lose fat and become more toned and lean as such. The numbers on the scales don't bother me as long as I lose body fat and become more toned.

Finally, are there any brands that are most recommended - the maxitone sculptress weight loss range is on offer at a local store so I was looking at that - has anyone used this and can they recommend it?

    Thanks

  • Good Beginner's tropical fish tank?

    Hi,

I'm looking at setting up a tropical fish tank but I'm not sure which tank/what size would be best.

I don't have an unlimited amount of space so I'd prefer a mid sized tank. I've had a look around and found a few tanks that I like the look of but I don't know if any of them are any good!

Does anyone know if the Juwel Vio 40 is a decent beginner's tank? The tank is 30L, is that big enough to establish a small community of fish?

I also particularly like the BiOrb Life tanks, but I've heard that the BiOrb tanks are particularly bad for fish, is this true?

Finally, I also really like the 'Fluval Edge' tanks, I would be able to get the 46 litre one of these as the footprint is the same as the 23L, is this a better size?

    Juwel Vio: http://www.juwel-aquarium.co.uk/Juwel-vio.html

    BiOrb Life: http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=Biorb&o...

    Fluval Edge: http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/aquarium-supplie...

If none of these are any good, can you suggest another brand/size/type? I would really prefer one of the 'all in one' tanks with the filter/wires/lights hidden as I find them much nicer to look at :)

    Thanks :)

  • Which breed would be best for me?

    Hi,

I've been waiting for some time to get a dog, I'm now in a situation where this is possible but I'm a little stuck on which breed to get so I was hoping you could help.

I currently live in a 2 bed first floor flat without a garden but with parks and woodland nearby, I do study and will be starting a new job in a couple of months, but during the week I will be out of the house a total of 5 hours a day (including travel time) with the exception of fridays where that increases to 8 hours broken up into 2 chunks (so 2.5 hours or 4 hours at a time). Most days I can come home at lunch to let him out and give him a quick walk but on the 8 hour day I have looked into hiring a dog walker/puppy creche

I'd like a puppy, and now seems to be the most appropriate time as I have a couple of months before I start my new job so I am at home all day for now to take care of house training etc.

At the minute I cycle for about half an hour every morning so I would eventually like to be able to bring my dog with me, but until he is old enough, the bike ride can be changed into a walk! Realistically I would think that with that half hour morning exercise I could provide a quick walk round the block during the day and then another hour in the evening.

So if anyone has any suggestions of dog breeds that would be ok with all of that, I'd love to hear them!

    Thanks :)

  • Can I take my dog biking with me?

    Hi,

I particularly like very high energy breeds (Such as springers, Vizslas,Weimeraners and Aussies). I'd love one of these, but I'm worried about being able to meet their exercise requirements. So I was thinking that since I go cycling every morning for around 45 minutes, could I take an (adult) dog with me (if I built them up gradually).

And would 30-45 minutes biking in the morning, 45min-1hr walk mid day and a 1hr walk/free run/play session in the evening be enough for one of those breeds? (An adult dog only of course - I assume puppies would need a bit less)

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to attach my dog to the bike (or is it better if I just hold the lead, or just train them to run alongside the bike off leash)?

    Thanks :)

  • What counts as 'moderate exercise'?

I'm looking at adopting/buying a dog (I have another question in which I've asked about specific breeds) and I was just wondering what 'moderate exercise' means?

Basically, most of the dog books/care sheets/online articles and breed selectors just state 'This dog will be happy with moderate exercise' but never do they say what that counts as - I was sort of hoping that a 'moderate exercise' dog would be happy with between an hour and a half and 2 hours a day but I'm unsure.

(Dogs that I've been told are 'moderate exercise dogs' included golden retrievers, Springer spaniels, Weimeraners, German Shorthaired pointers, Boston terriers and Shelties - is this right?)

    thanks

  • Best dog breed for me?

    Hi,

I'm looking at buying/adopting a dog/puppy soon, but I'm not sure what breed I'd be best with.

I currently work 9-5, five days a week but I can be home for an hour at lunch (I work less than 5 minutes away from my house, so travel time isn't a problem) so the dog would be home for 3 hours in a morning and 4 in an afternoon with a break and a quick walk in between.

I was planning on a half hour walk in the morning, a quick 15 min at lunch and then an hour on an evening (but this can change, depending on the dog of course).

The only problem with all of this is that I live in a first floor apartment and as such, don't have immediate access to a garden (we do have a shared garden but of course I can't just open a door onto it! (The landlord has no problem with me keeping a dog - it is already written into the contract that pets are allowed, and there are no weight limits on dogs, the only thing I need to be aware of is keeping the noise levels fairly low as I obviously don't want to upset the neighbours!).

So I'd like a dog that would be ok with between and hour and a half and 2 hours of exercise a day, and could deal with being left alone for a few hours at a time, I'd prefer a medium sized dog but I'm open to suggestions!

Any suggestions on dog breeds would be appreciated, although I would prefer not to have chihuahuas or Jack Russels. I love dogs like Vizslas, weimeraners and Aussies although I'm absolutely sure they're not apartment dogs, something similar would be lovely!

Oh and the only reason why I am considering buying a dog as well as adopting is that many rescues will not rehome to me as the garden is shared, but would love to rescue a dog if possible.

    thanks!

  • Can I run multiple apps together on original iPad?

I'm debating getting an iPad to take onto campus with me instead of my much heavier laptop. But I don't know whether I would need an iPad 2 or whether the original iPad would be sufficient.

The camera and weight difference doesn't bother me. But, I have heard people saying that you can't 'multitask' on an iPad whilst others say that it is wrong and the iPad is perfectly capable of multitasking. So my question is, on the original iPad would I be able to run a number of apps together as you can on a laptop? (I usually run Firefox, itunes, twitter and Microsoft office or equivalent at the same time). And also, do the 'smart covers' work with the original iPad?

    thanks

  • Best way to record lectures?

    Hi :)

I'm due to start Uni again in October, and I'd like to find a way to record my lectures. The lectures are not already recorded and made available to us so I need to find something to record them myself. All the lecturers I have next year have said that they are happy for the lectures to be recorded.

So far, I've tried to record lectures on my phone (a Samsung Wave) but the quality was not as good as I'd like. I usually sit around the middle of a fairly large lecture theatre and we are not allowed to leave our recording devices at the front of the class. Hence, I need something that can clearly record from a distance and cancel out a bit of background noise.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions of audio recorders or anything that will do the job!

    thanks :)

  • How quiet are 'silent' electric violins?

    Hi,

I already have an acoustic violin - I use a fairly heavy rubber encased metal mute when I play because I live in a shared flat and the walls are pretty thin (my flatmates have complained about the noise before). I was thinking about getting an electric violin to practise on on an evening because I like the idea of being about to plug my headphones in and hear myself play without disturbing anyone else.

Clearly, no violin can be completely silent as the strings will still vibrate when bowed, but if I had my headphones plugged in or the violin turned off/unplugged, would people in the next room be able to hear me play? And how quiet are the 'silent' violins?

    thanks! :)

  • difference between Core 2 Duo and i5 processors in the new Macbook Pro?

    Hi! :)

I'm looking at buying a Macbook Pro and there are 2 that I'm struggling to chose between. The first is what I believe to be the 2010 model with the Core 2 Duo processor, the second is the 2011 model with a core i5 processor. However, the second one is also £300 more expensive. My question is, is the difference in processor enough to justify the difference in price? (I'll be running firefox, office, itunes, painter and photoshop simulateously)

    Here are the specs I've been given of both machines in case it helps;

    2.3GHz Intel Core i5

    4Gb RAM 1333 MHz

    320Gb HDD

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 256 MB

    Intel HD Graphics

    and

Intel 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU

    4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory

    500GB HDD

    9400M ATI GPU

    SD Card Reader

    thanks :)

  • Do I need to have a piano at home to learn to play?

I'm looking into having some piano lessons beginning in the summer and obviously, I'll need to practice at home too. However, at home we don't have room for a piano so I was just wondering whether I could still practice at home on a keyboard and transfer that over to piano playing or whether I need a piano at home to practice properly?

    thanks :)
