Losing weight and protein shakes?
Hi,
I'm a little confused regarding protein shakes - I have a good healthy diet for the most part (although I admit I tend to snack a little too often) and I go to the gym around 4 times a week to do roughly 40min cardio and 20min stretching and weights.
I'm trying to lose weight and so far it is slowly working, but I just wondered if protein shakes might be beneficial? I don't necessarily want to build muscle to a visible level but I know that muscle helps you lose weight so with that sort of workout and that goal in mind, would they be beneficial. If so, is it better to have them before or after a workout (I tend be very very hungry after a workout so could I use the shake then?).
Just to clarify actually, I'm not trying necessarily to lose weight, rather, lose fat and become more toned and lean as such. The numbers on the scales don't bother me as long as I lose body fat and become more toned.
Finally, are there any brands that are most recommended - the maxitone sculptress weight loss range is on offer at a local store so I was looking at that - has anyone used this and can they recommend it?
Thanks

Protein supplements do not help you lose weight and they DON'T build muscle - no matter what people say.
Burning more calories than you take in is going to help you lose weight. That's it. Control your eating, cut down on sugars, starches, and fats, reduce the amount you eat at each sitting, and get your exercise. Then you will lose weight.
To build muscle, do very strenous weight lifting and workouts. When you do strenuous exercises you actual burn out and tear muscle tissue. Your cardio, stretching and weights, isn't really going to do much damage to muscles. Your body uses proteins directly to repair muscle tissue. If you don't otherwise get protein in your diet then that might be important but most people get an adequate amount. If you get into serious muscle building the protein supplements might be in order but not with what you're doing. It simply makes for expensive urination.

Your best bet for sustainable healthy weight loss can be summed up in six words: eat less eat better move more (thank you Henry Rollins) It looks like you've got the first and last item nailed down. Not sure about the protein shakes though. No substitute for a balanced meal surely, and how many calories do those things have? Think about it. As far as gaining weight is concerned, keep in mind that as you excercise and weight train you will gain muscle. Just keep up the cardio, maybe up your run to 45 minutes or an hour if you have time, and over time you should start to experience weight loss. It will take time though.

Protein shakes are specifically designed for building MASS. Building bulkier and stronger muscles, if you're trying to lose weight and take protein at the same time, you're fighting a losing battle my friend :/
If you are trying hard to become more toned, focus on replacing or removing the snack you've been eating. What you put in is what will come out to show on your body.
Good Luck!

protein shakes build bulk muscle , you do not want to use them at all. try preparing healthy food to snack on in advance to kill your hunger :)
