Causes for a dog being extremely itchy?

My 5 year old terrier/pug cross seems to have a sudden bout of extreme itchiness. He was up all night scratching and generally whining (not in pain whine, but irritated). I've got an appointment for the vet today, but not until too much later.

Any thoughts on the cause? He's not been to any strange places, dog parks or the vet lately. Although a friends puppy did just come over for a play date a couple days ago.

My initial thought was it was dry skin as it is VERY cold here and the furnace is always running, but the amount of discomfort he seems to be experiencing seems beyond that.

Update:

Honestly, the reason I kinda doubt it is mites or fleas is that I also have 4 cats and 2 other dogs, none of which are presenting any symptoms. Wouldn't it stand to reason that they would be affected, at least to some degree?

Update 2:

And, yes, I checked for any sort of visible parasites and saw nothing. (Though mites can be hard to see.) His tummy is naturally pretty bare and his skin doesn't even really seem irritated or patchy or anything. Basically, I can see no visible reason for the scratching.

He's not been on medication (well heartworm, but he had his last dose a month ago) and I've not switched his food or treats (both high quality vet brands).

It could be a number of things.

I would hope that your smart enough to check your dog for fleas and rule that out.

There are so many skin issues.

Sometimes they are caused by the dog food you feed -

Corn, wheat, soy are not good for your dog.

Did you just bath your dog? If, so what kind of shampoo did you use?

Maybe you bath your dog too much/

    Could be Yeast infection.

I would just wait for the vets opinion. I hope you have a good one.

If its Yeast - I would seek some natural cures as the stuff they will prescribe your dog will clear it up for a while and then it will come back worse. THe meds the give dogs for yeast infections of the skin kills both good and bad bacteria/

It could be allergies if so the vet will prescribe medication or its severely dry skin some flea medicines can also cause irritaded skin if so do. What I did and switch him to a healthy coat and skin formula dog food or try changing him to a hollistic dog food or feed him a raw diet to nourish his coat and skin and give him an oatmeal bath once a week

Dry skin from the cold, as you said, could definitely be the cause.

Either that or poison ivy, allergies, a medication side effect, or a psychological problem.

Also, check your dog for parasites, such as fleas, ticks, mites, worms, etc.

    Fleas!

My dog had them a little while ago too. At first, I didn't know what was wrong with him. But then a friend suggested it and the vet confirmed it.
