The wifi tablets do not require a monthly fee. Full iPad/Android tablets with 3G do.
Some ebooks are free. Anything published before 1923 is in the public domain and can be legally downloaded for free. Gutenberg.org is one of the biggest sites with public domain material. You can also check ebooks out of your local library if they offer this service.
What do you mean by range? And which model - there are several.
Battery types depend upon the model, as does the capacity. But most hold 1000+ ebooks.
If they're in a supported format, you can download pretty much anything.
