what is the maximum size of bulbs to use in a four bulb ceiling fan?

Update:

I use low maintenance everywhere else where they cant be seen...guess I'll have to wait for some better designed ones. I wanted to put in four 60watt bulbs, but that seemed a risk. Back to the four 40 watt then. Thanks

It should really say on the fan itself, perhaps stamped on the socket, unless it's an older fan. If you can't find it and you know the brand and model you can try looking it up online to find out. I'd think that a 60w would be OK but I'd stay away from anything higher than that.

Do not guess. That should be marked on the sockets for the bulbs or elsewhere on the fan body. Do not exceed the maximum wattage as the lamps will draw too much heat and be a fire hazard.

I've never known any ceiling fan light socket to be rated for anything higher than a 60W bulb.

The last guy is right but if you use the new low energy bulbs they'll be lower wattage and so should be safe.
