What about Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", and the movie "Apocalypse Now" (The book is set in colonial Africa, the movie updated the setting to the Vietnam War) both are about a character exploring a threatening environment to find a person who has become evil and must be destroyed; and both are more about them exploring their own selves, and the outside jungle is a metaphor.
