What is the significance of Iowa and New Hampshire in the GOP primaries?

Even though I'm not American, I've been following US politics for a fairly long time now (since 2006) but there are a few things I still don't understand about the US election system.

One of these is, why are pundits always talking about how candidates are doing in Iowa and New Hampshire? Why are these 2 states so important? Why do the candidates spend so much time and money trying to do well in those states?

All advice gratefully accepted.

Thanks,

TV

Update:

Ahh, I C. Thank you Marcie, that explains it. Also, now that I have the correct search terms (Iowa caucuses and NH primary) i was able to google more details.

Many thanks

Iowa is the first caucus state and NH is the first primary state, so the winners will get publicity and money from supporters, while the losers will go broke and be forced to drop out, unless they have millions stashed away somewhere. So the number of candidates will decrease for the later primaries.

there'll be alot of neocons crying, because of the fact their loose holiday at their babies price would be over, and we can initiate rebuilding this usa as our founders meant and with the blueprint they gave us. I assume greater new hampshire are conscious to whats going on interior the international than iowans, yet I have no doubts approximately Ron Paul message is resonating with some iowans, we could wish its in time.
